Sclerotherapy Treatment for Spider Vein Removal

Written by Dr. Gesner

Minimally invasive sclerotherapy is a leading treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins for good reason: It’s one of the safest and most effective ways to improve the appearance of unsightly veins.

How sclerotherapy removes spider veins.

Sclerotherapy is performed by one of our highly experienced providers who uses a very fine needle to inject a sterile solution that closes spider veins. The body naturally reroutes blood to healthy veins, and results are gradual as the veins begin to fade.

Depending upon how many veins are treated, the treatment usually takes only 30 to 45 minutes. Most patients may return to their regular activities right away, and some will be advised to wear compression stockings for a short period afterward.

Prior to the procedure, you may be advised to stop taking NSAIDS, aspirin, blood thinners or other medications for a period of time.

The advantages of sclerotherapy for spider vein treatment.

Sclerotherapy is performed on an outpatient basis, and there’s no need for anesthesia. Side effects are rare and most patients experience positive outcomes. It’s also minimally invasive, with no sutures that require healing time. Because the needle used to inject the FDA-approved solution is very fine, few patients report pain and discomfort is minimal.

Due to its effectiveness, sclerotherapy is also used as a varicose vein treatment. Although the procedure is often done for cosmetic reasons, it can be a therapeutic treatment in cases involving symptoms such as swelling, aching, or burning in the legs or feet. Patients should consult with their insurance companies regarding their individual coverage.
